Leena wove her first rug when she was just 11 years old. Inspired by her neighbour in Finland, she created a little masterpiece that she and her family still use today.
After training in Finland and working for Finnish craft company Vuorelma, she brought her looms to the UK and set up on her own.
Now, more than 50 years after weaving her first rug, she still designs and weaves traditional Finnish rugs.
She has been selling them at the Finnish Church's Christmas Bazaar for many years, and her rugs have travelled to every continent. One family even took one of Leena's turquoise rugs to their Caribbean home because it was exactly the same colour as the ocean. Her customers have included actress Ingrid Bergman, who commissioned a stair runner for her London home.
Leena’s make-to-order rugs can be made to match your floors, furniture, wallpaper or curtains to make sure your hand-woven rug is just right. She also creates wall hangings, table runners, place mats and fireplace runners, using material sent specially to her from Finland.
Leena takes orders throughout the year and sells at the Finnish Church’s Christmas Fair in Rotherhithe, London.
